What are gas fees on NEAR? A real example
Gas is the small fee, paid in NEAR, for the network to run and record your transaction. On NEAR it is usually a fraction of a cent's worth of NEAR. It is separate from any fee a token or a trading pool takes.
This page walks through one real FLTC transaction so you can see the numbers yourself.
What gas measures
Every transaction asks the network's computers to do some work: check a signature, run contract code, write to storage. Gas is the unit that counts that work. NEAR counts it in very large numbers, so people use Tgas (teragas). 1 Tgas is 1,000,000,000,000 gas.
The network turns gas into a NEAR amount using the current gas price. The amount actually used is "burnt." A wallet usually attaches more gas than needed, as a limit. Unused gas is not charged.
A real FLTC transaction
On 14 October 2026 at 4:49 AM ET, the account enleap-test.near sent FLTC into the Rhea pool to swap it. Open the transaction on NearBlocks.
- Method called:
ft_transfer_callonfltc-af549c.launchpad.justhoot.near, which passed the tokens on to the Rhea pool contractdclv2.ref-labs.near. - Gas attached (the limit): 180 Tgas.
- Gas burnt (what was used): about 19.34 Tgas.
- Transaction fee: about 0.00178 NEAR (0.0017775596956329 NEAR).
- Attached deposit: 1 yoctoNEAR. That is the smallest unit of NEAR. Token contracts ask for it as proof that a real wallet confirmed the call.
So this swap used roughly a tenth of the gas it was allowed, and the whole network fee was under two thousandths of one NEAR. Simpler calls cost less. The storage deposit call on the wallet page used about 2.41 Tgas and cost about 0.000219 NEAR.
On NearBlocks, look for "Transaction Fee," "Gas Limit & Usage by Txn," and the list of receipts. Each receipt is one step, such as the token contract calling the pool.
Three different fees, kept apart
A trade like the one above can involve three separate costs. They are easy to mix up.
- Gas. Paid in NEAR to the network, for recording the transaction. It is the same idea for every token on NEAR.
- The FLTC token fee, 0.1%. Taken in FLTC by the FLTC contract itself. Part is burned, part is held for holders, and part goes to the creator. See how the fee is split and the live fee page.
- The Rhea pool fee, 1%. Taken by the Rhea trading pool on each swap and kept by the pool. It only applies when you trade in that pool.
Gas does not go to the FLTC creator or to the pool. The 0.1% and the 1% are not gas. If you only look at the "Transaction Fee" line on NearBlocks, you are seeing gas alone.
Why NEAR gas stays small
NEAR sets a low gas price and splits work across shards, so ordinary transactions cost little NEAR. Part of the gas is burned, which removes that NEAR from supply, and part can go to the contract that was called. You do not need to manage any of this. Your wallet shows an estimate before you approve.
What to take from this
Keep a little NEAR in your account for gas, even if you mainly hold tokens. Read the "Transaction Fee" line to see what the network charged. Check token and pool fees separately. None of this says anything about a token's value.
